The Royale RP31 is a Formula Ford car. Formula Ford is an entry-level class of single-seater racing cars. They do not have slick tyres, and they have no wings for downforce. The origins of FF began in the early 1960’s and aspiring F1 drivers would cut their teeth in this Formula. All of the cars were fitted with very similar Ford engines of around 110hp.
The Formula Ford class at Gurston Down was getting quite competitive, with a good number of entries at each meeting, so I thought I would have a crack at that class for a bit of fun, as the cars were not as fast as previous ones I had driven.
I saw this 1982 car for sale but when I called to enquire, they had sold the engine that was in the car, and it was now just a rolling chassis, although it did have a Hewland Mk9 gearbox included. I decided to buy it anyway, and thought that I could get an engine later, after I had restored it.

The finished car
When the car was finished, I tried to source a suitable engine but then decided I would not compete in the car after all, and I sold it as a rolling chassis, ready for someone else to install an engine.
